It is 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 8, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 28,176 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 315 cases. To review the most recent detailed report, go to-
Our office has received several calls and emails about COVID-19 vaccinations recently so I wanted to provide an update on where things stand today. This morning, Gov. Kay Ivey announced that the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) would begin providing COVID-19 vaccinations for people 75 years or older as well as first responders by appointment only beginning Monday, January 18.
To schedule an appointment for the free COVID-19 vaccination at the Mobile County Health Department, individuals may call the ADPH toll-free phone number at 1 (855) 566-5333. The City of Mobile is currently in the process of setting up a site for public vaccinations at the Mobile Civic Center as part of an ongoing partnership with USA Health Systems. We will be releasing more information about this very soon.
Today the Mobile Fire Rescue Department named fire service driver Michael Westley as December’s Firefighter of the Month. Westley has worked with MFRD for more than a decade and is a great teacher to young firefighters and a mentor to those looking to further their careers.
According to his fellow firefighters, Westley provides consistency, leadership and mentorship for his crew on emergency scenes and at the station. He is also a member of MFRD’s Peer Support Team, which is designed to help personnel who need assistance with stress management and mental health wellness.
In reviewing my journal today, I recalled that two years ago on this date that my former Chief of Staff, the late Paul Wesch, said to me during a particularly contentious time. He told me that “avoidance of discord cannot be the reason for failing to do what is right.†It’s something that has stayed with me.
People on both sides of any issue can use this statement to justify their actions. Thus, it may be that the important operative words are: “failing to do what is right.†How you get to resolving in your mind “what is right†is the key. Wise counsel and prayer are certainly part of the solution for me.
